I nearly fall out of bed when I hear my alarm clock ring. I sigh and get up to take a shower. Actually, I like working on saturdays but I really wanted to sleep in today. I was awake for a pretty long time yesterday. First university, then work, then driving school.
I let the warm water pour down my body but before I leave the shower again I turn it cold so it would make me wake up properly. I sigh and get out of the shower before wrapping a big towel around my body and another one around my hair. Then I head to the kitchen to prepare my breakfast, including Toast and cacao.
I never liked drinking coffee, I kept drinking cacao because it makes me relax a bit and get ready for the day. As soon as the toasts are in my toaster and the milk is in the microwave I head back to the bathroom to get my hair dryer and carry it to the living room to get my hair dry.
I sit down in front of the radio and turn it on while drying my blue and red hair. It used to have another... more natural colour but I tinted it. I've had a lot of different hair colours. I never wanted to dye my hair properly so I started to tint it and had another colour whenever I felt like it. So at the moment, It's cherry red and navy blue. I really liked it. It was like the american flag. Or like England's. Or Australia's.
After drying my hair, which was just a little shorter than shoulder-length -because it was summer and I always cut it then, so it's not so hot- I went back to my kitchen.
The living room's radio was still turned on so I could hear the songs playing. Since I live on my own now I turn it on pretty loud and jump around and dance a bit. And by living on my own I really mean: No mummy and daddy. No friends. No boyfriend... Of course I had friends! But they don't live with me.
It was supposed to be warm today, but rainy. I could already see the raindrops running down my window. Then there was an ad on the radio. One Direction. I sighed: 'Of course.' I was about to turn the radio off but then I decide to listen a little more at them. Some of the boys sounded happier than last time I heard them, but some also sounded sadder than normal. Maybe I just imagine that but it might as well be the truth.
After I finish eating breakfast I decide to get changed into my navy-blue chinos with the thin dark brown belt, and a cream-coloured blouse with small red dots all over it and a little loose bow on it. Yes, it did match my hair, which I actually didn't plan. I never really cared about it.
Even though I heard it'd be warm today I wear long trousers now because I know it would be kind of cold at work and going to work in shorts or hot pants just didn't seem right.
After putting my shoes on and grabbing my bag, I leave my flat. It's a mess, I didn't clean up but I would do it after work for sure.
Since I don't have my driving license yet, I've got to take the bus to go to work. It would take me nearly an hour to go there because the little library I work in is quite far away from town. Quite far away from London, where I live now.
I never wanted to live in London, because I always thought it was too big, too full of people, but the universities in London are said to be very good, so I decided to go to university in London and got a flat there but I still work in that little library. I worked in it before I started at university and I love it with all my heart.
It rains all the way to work so I plug in my earphones and listen to a cover by my favorite blonde irishman. I sigh and it takes me a lot to not fall asleep in the bus while listening to his beautiful voice. When I was still in school; I had to wake up at 6am every day, today I could even sleep an hour longer but it's still way too hard to get up in the mornings. I don't even know why, normally I'd wake up pretty easily -which wasn't the case during school- but today seemed to be different. As if something special would happen today and I could already... sense it.
When I arrive at work the first thing I do is sorting the books which took me about an hour because I like to do that slowly and carefully. The library won't open for another two hours so I decide to grab my favorite book and a cacao and sit down on one of the huge windowsills.
The two hours that were left pass by pretty fast and when it's time to open the library's door I can already see someone standing outside in the rain. It's Andrew! He went to this library since I started working here. Hazel and Coralie -the two cousins that actually run this small library- said he went here before to get books for studying but since I work here he comes every day and always asks if I'm working that day. I still don't (want to) believe that he's only here because of me.
I let him in and he goes to get the book he's reading at the moment.
As the library is far away from town there aren't many people who get their books here and I know all of them. I know their names. I know their stories. I know their favorite books. I know they all have enough books at home. And I know nobody of them will come today because it's raining like craZy and nobody would go outside for books. Except from Andrew.
As I know no one who usually gets their books here would come today I decide to sit down next to Andrew and read as well, my cacao in front of me.
Hazel and Coralie aren't going to come to work today. I know they are meeting some relatives somewhere in the north. This is one of the few times I'm on my own in the library. They do trust me but we realized that it's way more fun when there are at least two people working, so it won't get boring.
I sigh and take my glasses off.
"Why are you wearing sunglasses today?", Andrew suddenly asks and makes me giggle a little. "Because my proper glasses are broken...", I explain to him and grin. "And who's fault was that?" I just roll my eyes at him: "It was your fault, Drew!", I reply and we both have to laugh. Even though it wasn't actually funny that I had to wear sunglasses everywhere I go now because I can't see properly without them. But I still remember the moment when it happened as if it was yesterday... which it was...
He wanted to tell me one of his stupid jokes, while sitting down on a sofa. He was like: "The best way to start a sentence is-", and then he sat down on the sofa and all we could hear was a cracking sound and WOOOH! there go my glasses!
However, when my day of work is nearly over we suddenly hear the little bell ring that shows us that someone has entered the library. "I'll look who it is!", I explain and leave Andrew to check who the hell it could be. It happened to be a boy with big black aviator sunglasses and his hair hidden under a big dark blue snapback.
"Hello!", I great him with a big smile on my lips -even though it was probably a bit fake. "May I help you?", I ask still smiling as the boy didn't say a single word so far. He simply nods. "So?..." "I'd actually like to have a book on pregnancy", he explains and looks around as if someone would stalk him. I raise my eyebrow at him.
"For my... my girlfriend!...", he explains at my unspoken question. "Okay. Well we've got some over there so if you'd say what EXACTLY you want then I could help you find the perf-", I want to explain but he interrupts me: "It's fine. I'll find one myself!", he says and walks off. "-ect one!", I end my sentence nevertheless and head back to the book I'm reading.
I take the cup of cacao and go to the room in the back of the library to clean it up.
"I found one!", the boy shouts and I start to think I know this voice from somewhere. "Drew! Can you please do this?", I shout as I can't help the boy at the moment. "Sure!", he replies and gets everything ready. He'll have to make a new library card, because he has never been here before. I know Andrew is actually not supposed to do this because he's not working here but he's been here for so long and even Hazel and Coralie let him do some of their work sometimes.
"I need your ID now, please", I hear Andrew say. Then I just hear him gasp a little. "Are you...? Are you really...? Really...?", he says a name but I don't understand which one. Then I head back to the main room and see the boy slide his ID back into his pocket. He smiles at me. "Thanks Drew! I'll do the rest, though!", I say and Andrew walks off, keeping an eye on the boy as if he'd be... jealous...
As I finish everything and hand him the book he looks at me kind of... thankful and smiles again: "Thanks uhm... sorry I think I didn't catch your name!?" I hesitate a little: "It's... it's Rachel!", I explain and he nods nicely. Drew looks at me and raises one of his eyebrows but luckily he doesn't say anything against it. "Well thanks a lot, Rachel!", the boy then says and shakes my hand, as if we'd be some 1000-year-old grannies. "No problem. You're welcome. It's just my job!", I reply grinning.
"I'll make sure to come back sometime", he says and is about to leave the library. "Well you'll have to, I guess. You'll have to give the book back!", he giggles and leaves.
I don't know why but for some reason I felt like it would be better not to tell him my real name. I knew this day would be different... But for now I just didn't want to think about it anymore. Andrew and I both leave the library shortly after the boy was gone as well, and I lock the door. Tomorrow will be another day. A good one! I rush home because I still have to do soo many things for tomorrow.
