This simply can't be true! She can't be here. I've got to dream. Someone wake me up please?
"Y-You are d-dead", I state and stare at her in disbelief. She doesn't seem to like what I said and I can see anger grow in her eyes.
"Am I?", she asks quietly, "How come?" She seems to be really angry by now even though she stays calm.
"JUST BECAUSE I'M NOT A PART OF YOUR LIFE ANYMORE DOESN'T MEAN I'M DEAD!" ...well now you could tell she was angry. I don't reply. "That doesn't kill a person. Yes, you did break me. But because I couldn't believe you did this to me. Because I couldn't stand all the hate. But I'm still alive, right? The world doesn't revolve around you. And all of that doesn't kill me", she ends.
I can hear that she calmed herself down a little bit.
"But a car does", I simply say and look at the ground, trying to hold back the tears. She gasps for air. The anger leaves her eyes and gets replaced by confusion. "H-How do you mean that?", she stutters.
I hesitate. She'll think I'm craZy if I tell her what happened. Well it obviously didn't happen, did it?
"Y-You got hit by a car the day you left-?", I doubt a little because what I thought was true was actually a lie, I guess. "And how's that?", she asks confused yet quietly. "They said the car hit you. The day you left. And you-you actually...", the 'd'-word, oh how I hated it, "you were gone-"
She still looks confused: "They!?" "The policemen who were there." She stays quiet for a while and seems to think about something. "I-It wasn't me", she simply says and makes me raise my eyebrows.
"How do you-", I start but she interrupts me; "I was there, that day. And I saw that car. But I wasn't hit by that car. I was angry and I just wanted to walk away", she started to explain, looking like she had a flashback, "so I walked to that street and I totally forgot everything around me. I didn't see that car coming... as well as the girl who was right behind me. But she wasn't as lucky as me, I guess. You remember Coralie? From the library?",
she asks and I nod my head, "well she was there that day and she saw that car coming, as well as she saw me on that street. So she grabed my wrist and pulled me away from the street. She saved my life...", she remains silent for a few seconds as if she'd thank Coralie mentally for what she did, "but she couldn't save the girl's life..."
"But they found your ID there?", it was more like a question even though I knew that was exactly what the policemen said. "Yeah. I can imagine that", she simply replies causing me to raise my eyebrows again, "for some reason I had it in my hands that moment. I think I lost it when Coralie pulled me away", that explains a lot.
"And then? What did you do? Where did you go?", I asked because I wanted to know basically everything. "I stayed in Canada for a few more days because I needed a new ID and stuff... and then I went back to England with Hazel and Coralie. They offered me that job in their library and I started working there", she smiled a little, thinking about her job.
She obviously likes working there with the two girls. She looks at me again with an impression I can't explain.
"I missed you!", I suddenly say. I didn't want to say it, well yes I actually did but not at that very moment. She doesn't seem to be ready for that yet. I stare at the ground because I'm kind of afraid of her reaction.
"You ruined my life!", she simply replies. It's more like she whispered it.
I didn't say anything. I just found out that she isn't gone like I thought and now I've got to realize that I lost her again. Which is even worse because now I know she's not d-dead but I still can't get her. She hates me. She probably never wants to see me again.
Suddenly I feel two arms wrapped around my body. I look up to find light blonde hair, tickling my nose. "I missed you too!", Annika mumbles into the crook of my neck. It takes me a second till I really realize that it's really her. I gladly hug her back. I smile as much as I probably haven't smiled for the last year and a single tear rolls down my cheek.
She looks up and right into my eyes, seeing the tear drop. She brushes it away with her thumb and that's when her eyes start to tear as well. I smile weakly and run my hand through my hair, when suddenly her eyes widen. "What?", I ask, being a little confused.
"You can be the peanut butter to my jelly", she states and looks at my wrist, "You still have it?", she asks and points at the bracelet on my wrist. I nod my head and my heart beats faster when she moves her arm next to mine. "You too", I state and smile, "why do you still have it?", I ask so quietly that I didn't think she heard it but she did.
"Because I really missed you", she replies quietly and smiles a tiny bit. So she did hear it. "You don't even have a clue how much I missed you!", I state and hug her tight, hiding my face in her light blonde hair. She laughs a little after hugging me back and says; "So... tell me what happened while I was gone!"
"A lot!", I simply say because I'm still too overwhelmed. "Yeah. Should've guessed that!", she joked at my detailed answer.
"Wilma is pregnant", I explained. "Really?!", she gasped but looked totally happy. "Oh I'm so happy for her!", her eyes were sparkling and I could see she really meant what she said. "Boy or girl?", she asked being excited. "They don't know it yet!", I say and explain why Wilma decided to keep it a secret.
"But enough about Wilma and Harry! Tell me what you did during that year!", I suddenly say and her smile fades a little. "You dyed your hair quite often, didn't you?"
Suprisingly, she shakes her head: "No, I actually didn't. I just tinted it", she explains, "I could never dye it! I love my blonde hair to much to do it! Just like I couldn't just take off the bracelet because I lo-", she stops herself, "-like you too much as well!"
I grin. Was she really going to say 'love'? I could've sworn she wanted to say that.
"Well... that's my flat!", she suddenly says, after we talked about basically everything that happened to her and the boys during the time we thought she wasn't with us anymore... I could feel my face sadden.
"Can I get your new number then?", I ask, feeling insecure. She nods her head; "Sure, you can", she smiles and writes down a few numbers on a piece of paper. "There you go!", she states and puts the note in my open hand. I close it and my smile immediately grows. And it grows even more -if this is even possible- when she suddenly hugs me tight.
I wonder if that much smiling is even good for my mouth since I haven't smiled properly for quite a while. My mouth isn't used to this anymore but I think we can change that!
She looks right into my eyes and then just slightly presses her lips on my cheek. "Bye Niall. See you soon!", she says and turns around to enter the flat.
See you. See you soon.
I never thought that would be possible.
I believe in miracles again.
